East Providence - Adelaide (Rose) Xavier, a cherished matriarch and a pillar of her community, passed away peacefully at her home in East Providence, RI, on December 12, 2023, at the age of 93. Born on June 4, 1930, in East Providence, RI, to the late Manuel and Adelaide (Goulart) Rose, Adelaide grew up imbued with a deep sense of family and community that would come to define her life.
Wife of the late Manuel C. Xavier, Adelaide's legacy is carried on by her loving children: Christiana Sherwood of Hope Mills, NC, Irene Correia, Cynthia Miner both of East Providence, Gerald Xavier of Seekonk, Richard Xavier of Smithfield, and Eugene Xavier of East Providence. She was the proud sister of Eugene Rose of East Providence and the adored grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of 3, who will all remember her loving, kind, and gentle spirit.
Adelaide was a woman of remarkable work ethic and dedication. She was the co-owner of City Pastry, where her pastries brought joy to many. She also showcased her industriousness during her 21 years as an assembler for the Davol Rubber Company. Her commitment to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family and her community.
Her involvement in cultural associations was a testament to her love for her heritage and her desire to keep traditions alive. Adelaide was a proud member of the Beneficiente Association of Pawtucket, the Espirito Santos do Pico of New Bedford, MA, the Confraternizacao Piconese of East Providence, and the Amigos da Terceira of Pawtucket. Through these associations, she built long-lasting friendships, supported cultural events, and contributed to the vibrant tapestry of her community.
Adelaide's interests extended beyond her work and cultural involvement. She was a beacon of love and care in her neighborhood and among her friends. Her home was often the gathering place where family and friends would be greeted with the aroma of her cooking and the warmth of her smile. Her gentle demeanor and her ability to listen and offer wise counsel will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her funeral will be held on Monday December 18, 2023, at 11:00am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30pm in St. Martha’s Church,2595 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence.
Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.
