Alexander B. Fernandes, affectionately known as Alex, passed away peacefully at his home in Providence on Friday, February 28, 2025. Born on October 29, 1964, in Portugal, Alex was the cherished son of the late Alexandre and Hilda (Barros) Fernandes. His warm laughter and generous spirit will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Alex dedicated over three decades of his life to managing properties, establishing himself as a respected self-employed property manager. His strong work ethic and commitment to his profession were evident to his colleagues and those who had the pleasure of working with him. Alex's involvement in his community was also noteworthy, as he was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church.
A true son of Fox Point, Alex never lost his love for the neighborhood where he spent his entire life. His interests were as varied as they were passionate. An avid coin collector, he spent countless hours in search of unique and rare pieces to add to his collection. Flea markets were among his favorite things, where he could be found haggling good-naturedly over treasures that caught his eye.
Alex was also quite the handyman, always ready to lend a hand or fix something that was broken. His skills were a testament to his resourcefulness and ability to solve problems with grace and patience. On Sundays, you could find him cheering on his beloved New England Patriots, celebrating every victory with the same enthusiasm as if it were their first.
Above all, family was the cornerstone of Alex's life. He was a loving brother to Mario Fernandes and his girlfriend Tracy Smith of Johnston. His role as an uncle to Aiden Fernandes was one he embraced with joy and pride. Alex's presence at family gatherings was a source of happiness, his funny anecdotes and faith-filled outlook uplifting everyone around him.
Those who knew Alex best would describe him as funny, generous, and faith-filled. His humor brought light into the darkest of rooms, and his generosity knew no bounds. He gave freely of his time, his resources, and his heart, always ensuring that those he loved were taken care of. His faith was the guiding force in his life, providing him with strength and comfort through all of life's ups and downs.
As we bid farewell to Alexander B. Fernandes, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and laughter. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and community, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the fortune to cross paths with him. Alex's journey on this earth may have come to a close, but the memories he created will continue to thrive in the stories shared and the lives he touched.
We take comfort in knowing that Alex has found eternal peace and that his spirit will always be with us, guiding us with the same compassion and wit that he displayed each day of his remarkable life. His passing is not an end, but a transition to a place where every coin is a rare find, every Patriots game ends in victory, and laughter is the language of the realm.
Rest in peace, Alex. You have lived well, loved much, and left us with a treasure trove of memories that will be cherished forever.
