Alfred "Freddy" Fratus Obituary

West Warwick - Alfred L. "Freddy" Fratus, a cherished father, companion, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at Hope Hospice on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on November 9,1946, in Providence, Rhode Island, Freddy was the loving son of the late Alfred and Julia Lopes (Meenagh)Fratus. His life was a testament to his strong spirit, loving nature, and handy skills that endeared him to all who knew him.

Freddy proudly served his country as a Private in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. His dedication to his nation was mirrored in his commitment to his work as a Heavy Truck Mechanic, a role in which he took great pride, first Coastal International Trucks and then for the City of Providence, for many years. His work was not just a job but a reflection of his passion for mechanics and his exceptional ability to solve problems.

In his personal life, Freddy was known for his enduring companionship with Erin Messier of West Warwick, with whom he shared many joyful years. He is survived by his 9 children: Freddy Fratus, Jr. of Coventry, Steven Fratus of Coventry, Jamie Fratus of Coventry, Jordan Fratus of Cranston, Brenda Fratus of Berlin, N.H., Lenore Duarte of North Kingstown, Kim Slezak of Coventry, Lauren Diogo of New York, and Ashley Fratus of West Warwick. Freddy was also a beloved brother to Marie Gilliam of Coventry, Carol Belmore of Warwick, and brother to Joe Meenagh. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis, Michael, and Donald Fratus. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Freddy leaves behind 16 grandchildren, and his six great-grandchildren, as well as three step-grandchildren. His role as a patriarch was one he embraced wholeheartedly, and his influence will be felt through generations.

For over 11 years, Freddy made his home in West Warwick, after many years in Warwick, and became a familiar and friendly face at various Portuguese Clubs, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and culture. His love for playing the lottery, especially the daily numbers game, was well known among his friends and family, who will miss his hopeful anticipation for each draw.

Freddy was a man of many talents and interests, but above all, he will be remembered as handy, loving, and spirited. These words capture the essence of a man who could fix anything, who gave his love freely, and whose spirit lifted those around him.

As we bid farewell to Alfred L. "Freddy" Fratus, we reflect on the joy he brought into our lives and the unwavering support he provided. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet his memory will continue to inspire and comfort us. Freddy's life was a journey filled with laughter, love, and resilience, and his story will be told with fondness by the many lives he touched.
