Barbara Saladis, born Barbara Jasko to Andrew and Theresa on October 9, 1931, passed away at the age of ninety-three on January 5th, 2025, after a long life filled with music, family gatherings, and the friendship of many.
Barbara is the beloved mother of Helen, Frank, Peter, Joseph, Teresa, and Eugene.
Barbara was born in Manhattan in 1931 and the family moved to Travis Staten Island where she lived for several years. She attended Public School 26 and Port Richmond High School. She married Peter Saladis on May 1st, 1949. They lived in Travis and, upon Peter’s retirement from the NYC Sanitation Dept., moved to Middlebury Center Pennsylvania.
Barbara loved sewing and making crafts and was a gifted seamstress, making dresses, gowns, and baptismal garments for her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved music, reading, cooking, gardening, and visiting with her family. Her favorite craft was making sequined Christmas Stockings for her grandchildren.
Barbara had a fulfilling career as a Medical Assistant and was employed at St. Vincents Hospital, and Concord Neurological Associates. She was also employed by Dr. Leroy Schwartz who encouraged her to become a Medical Assistant and became a close friend. She gained the esteemed position of President of the Staten Island Chapter of the Medical Assistants Association from1978 to1980.
She was a very warm and friendly person and there was a touch of an angel in her heart. She volunteered at the Senior Center in Wellsboro Pennsylvania and managed the kitchen at St. Peter’s church for several years. After the tragedy of 911, she baked and sold pies at church functions and donated all funds to the families of the 911 victims. During the covid pandemic 2020, Barbara worked tirelessly to donate masks where her granddaughter Maria was working in a covid ICU. It is estimated Barbara hand sewed over 200 masks for the healthcare workers at Rhode Island hospital and for her family and friends.
Barbara loved to listen to traditional Hungarian music, her favorite movie was Dr. Zhivago and she enjoyed the music of the Travis Westerners, a Staten Island country band where her husband Peter was a guitar player and singer.
Barbara is survived by her children Helen, Frank, Peter, Joseph and Teresa, her brother Matthew, sixteen grand grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
The family is thankful for her long life and the memories she created.
A Mass of Christian Burial has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2025, 10:30am at St. Anthony of Padua, 4055 Victory Blvd., Travis Staten Island.
