Charles Gwynne Obituary

LTC Charles Stuart Gwynne, Sr., 79, of Lexington, South Carolina passed away on November 11, 2025.  He was the beloved husband of the late Ann M. (Anderson) Gwynne.

Born in Cranston, Rhode Island he was the son of the late Arthur W. Gwynne II and Patricia (Gallagher) Gwynne.  He was preceded in death by sister Patricia G. Dupont, brother Arthur W. Gwynne III, and sister Susan L. Karpovitz.

He graduated from the Providence Country Day School in 1964 and the United States Military Academy in 1969.  Commissioned in the infantry, he served 21 years in the United State Army including the command of a rifle company in Vietnam at 24 years of age and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.  He received a master’s degree from the University of Maryland in International Relations in 1974.  He retired from the U.S. Army in 1990, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  He then returned to the Providence Country Day School where he taught mathematics and served as the Athletic Director for 15 years until his retirement.  He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golf, bowling and supporting all the Boston professional teams,

Charles’ great pride and joy were his children.  He is survived by daughter Jennifer M. Gwynne (Sean), daughter Jamie G. Nostrant (Christopher), and son Charles S. Gwynne Jr. (Kelley).  He was a proud grandfather to Jordan, Stratford, Caiden, Charles III, and Henry.  And he will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on the evening of Monday, June 29, 2026, from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, Rhode Island. Burial with Military Honors will be Tuesday June 30, 2026, at 11:30am in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery,301 South County Trail in Exter, Rhode Island.
