Evelyn Charlotte (Carey) Cottam

Evelyn C. Cottam died Sunday Sept. 8 ,2024  at the age of 96, She was born in Providence, the daughter of the late Robert E. and Charlotte (Lovett) Carey, widow of the late Albert Cottam, Jr., sister of the late William Carey, George Carey, Olive Soderlund, Florence Roza and Janet Durfee. She was the beloved Aunt to her nieces and nephews, Bruce Soderlund, Lael Eaton, Leslie Carey, Robert Carey, Jessica Carey, Anthony Roza, David Roza, Stephen Durfee, Elliott Durfee, Sheila Durfee, and the late Kenneth Soderlund.

Evelyn was a 1945 graduate of East Providence High School and made her home in North Providence. She retired as an Engineering Accountant from the Uniroyal Mill Complex in Providence after a thirty-one-year career and then worked part time for the Rhode Island Golf Association for many years.

Evelyn and Albert enjoyed traveling, visiting dozens of states and National Parks including Yosemite and Yellowstone, with travels to Europe and several Caribbean islands,  Evelyn spent many of her retirement winters in Florida.

Evelyn was a member of the Second Baptist Church in East Providence and frequent attendee of the Greenville Baptist Church. She enjoyed photography, playing golf, coin collecting, knitting, gardening and most of all, attending the many birthdays, weddings and other celebrations of life with her family and friends. She supported dozens of charities far and wide during her liftetime, seldom saying no to a request for assistance.

Evelyn was an excellent conversationalist, intelligent, independent and possessed the infamous Carey wit, which made everything interesting.

She was the last of her generation and will be remembered as a loving and generous Aunt and friend.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 12:00pm in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park , 1 Rhode Island Avenue, Johnston, RI.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Saturday MORNING from 11:00am – 12:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Hattie Ide Chaffee Nursing Home, 200 Wampanoag Trail East Providence,RI, 02915.
