Gerry Massey, Sr. Obituary

Gerald B. "Gerry" Massey, Sr., aged 75, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday July 3, 2024, at Summit Commons in Providence. Born on April 10, 1949, in Attleboro, MA, Gerry was the cherished son of Louise (Ruel) Massey of Cumberland and the late Harvey H. Massey, Jr. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and dedication to his family and community.

Gerry grew up in Cumberland, RI, where he cultivated many lifelong friendships. He was the proud father of two sons, Gerald B. "Gerry" Massey, Jr. of Mesa, Arizona and Logan Xavier of Florida. Gerry's siblings, Jeffrey H. Massey, Edgar A. Massey, Rochelle L. Kryla, and Vivian L. Cleary, will fondly remember his humor and unwavering support. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harvey D. Massey, Sr., and Philip J. Massey. His joy was multiplied by his adoring grandchildren, Zachary Massey, Kylie McKinney, Brynlie Massey, Joanie Xavier, and Phoenix Xavier, as well as his great-grandchildren, Blaine and Leia Massey.

For over 30 years, Gerry served his community as a funeral director and embalmer at the Rebello Funeral Home in East Providence. His professional dedication and empathetic nature provided comfort to countless families during their times of greatest need. Gerry's commitment to service was further exemplified by his enlistment in the United States Air Force, where he served a Sergeant in Saigon, during the Vietnam War.  After he was Honorably discharged from the Air Force, he was active with the American Legion, where he shared camaraderie and a passion for helping fellow veterans.

For many years Gerry also owned and operated Galaxy Bar in Downtown Providence where everyone was accepted regardless of their race, creed, religion and/or personal preferences. The Galaxy team would often enter community leagues and tournaments for horseshoes, softball, pool and bowling. They donated countless amounts of money for various charities.

Gerry's life in Cumberland and Providence was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family and friends. At one point, he even considered a political run for the position of Mayor of the City of Providence. He was known for his generous spirit, often going out of his way to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. His presence was a source of stability and love, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
