Gilda F. Moniz, 90, of East Providence, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Eastgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Joao Moniz, who passed away on December 21, 2009.
Born in São Miguel, Ponta Garça, Azores, on March 3, 1934, Gilda was a loving daughter of the late Manuel Furtado and Maria Jose (Do Rego) Furtado. She grew up in the Azores and emigrated to the United States by herself in 1959, sending for her husband and eldest daughter once she had saved enough money. Gilda worked as a packer for many years at various companies, including Spidel Corp., Gemcraft, and Imperial Knife.
Gilda enjoyed taking walks and bus rides to different places. Proud of her Portuguese heritage, she made the best sweet bread and had a deep love for Portuguese music. A woman of strong faith, she was a devout Catholic and a longtime communicant of Saint Francis Xavier Church in East Providence. Her favorite times were those spent in the company of her adoring family.
Gilda is survived by her devoted children: Lucia Travassos and her husband Armando of East Providence, and David Moniz of Kathleen, GA. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Philip Travassos, Susan Travassos, Michael Moniz, and Bianca Moniz, as well as her five great-grandchildren: Logan, Olivia, Hazel, John, and Julia also the late great-grandson Shiloh. She is also survived by her two sisters, Maria de Conceicao of Georgia and Angelina Ribeiro of East Providence, and her two brothers, Manuel Ferreira of Middleboro and Joao Ferreira of Bridgewater. She was the mother of the late Joao Manuel Moniz and the sister of the late Jorge Ferreira.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Gilda's funeral on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, celebrated by Reverend Jorge Rocha at Saint Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside, where Gilda will be laid to rest with her late husband, Joao.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Gilda's name to a charity of one's choice.
