Henrique Mare Obituary

Warwick – Henrique Brandino Garcia Mare, affectionately known as Henry, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on July 2, 1947, in Riberia Grande, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was the son to his late parents, Antonio Goncalves Mare and Teresa DeJesus Garcia Mare.

Henry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lidia (Correia) Mare. He was a dedicated and supportive father to their son Steve C. Mare of Scituate, and daughter Susan Botelho and her husband Hernani Botelho of Cranston. In addition to his immediate family, Henry was the oldest brother of Dora Salgueiro and Fernando Mare.

He was a source of unwavering support and affection for his grandchildren, Toryanna Charron, Brianna Mare, Milan Tomasetti, and Marissa Botelho, who will forever cherish memories of their grandfather's love and guidance. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Salvatore, Sonny, and Brody “Joe”, all of whom brought him immense joy.

Henry was a soccer enthusiast, with his love for the sport beginning in his home in Sao Miguel. He played for Benfica Aguiar in Riberia Grande from ages 14 – 18 until he left to serve as a Corporal in the Portuguese Army from 1968 – 1971. When he moved to the United States in 1971, he continued his love of soccer by playing for Bristol Sports for one year before coaching for 25 years for numerous soccer clubs including Young Nationals in Fall River, Warren Soccer Club, Philip Street Hall Soccer Club, Lusitana in Cumberland, Holy Ghost of West Warwick, Academica in Fall River, Cranston Portuguese Club, and finally ending his coaching career at the Braga Club. His love and passion for soccer earned him a spot in the New England Soccer Hall of Fame. Amongst all his playing and coaching, his biggest love was for Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

Henry was a savvy businessman, always with his eyes on his next venture. He was the sole proprietor of JC Fence Company for 50 years and started his business with no formal education or training. With the help of his children and son-in-law, they grew the business to great success as the longest standing fence company in Rhode Island. He found great pleasure in real estate investments, working with his daughter to buy and flip multiple properties over the years.

Outside of business, Henry let his passion for soccer lead him to travel the world. He visited Japan, Venezuela, Germany, Mexico, London, Lisbon, and several other cities to watch his favorite teams play. But his true joy was being surrounded by his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was nothing he loved more than spending quality time with those he loved, sharing a meal (or a cigarette), laughing, and telling stories.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 11,2025 at 8:30am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street.
