PROVIDENCE – Isaac J. Coney, 66, of Providence, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Miriam Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Rodney A. Burkett.
Born on January 30, 1958, in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Isaac was the loving son of the late Charlie L. Coney and Alice B. Coney Gould (Simpkins). He grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was a 1976 graduate of Piper High School. Following graduation, Isaac proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years. Stationed in Germany during his service, he ventured beyond the base, unlike many of his peers, establishing many lifelong friendships that endure to this day. He was honorably discharged in 1980 with the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
Isaac worked at UPS in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after his service. He moved to Indiana in 1982 to be with Rodney whom he married on August 27, 2007 in Norwalk, Connecticut. He attended IUPUI in Indianapolis and followed a successful career in banking. Over the years, he worked for several banking institutions, including Chase Bank and Fifth Third Bank. After relocating to New England, he continued his career at Bank of America in Taunton, Massachusetts.
A man of many talents and interests, Isaac had a passion for music and dancing. During the pandemic, he fulfilled a longtime dream of learning to play the violin. He was also a fabulous cook and an avid gardener, known for his green thumb. Isaac was a warm, genuine, and caring person, deeply devoted to his friends and family. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his beloved husband, Rod, Isaac is survived by his stepfather W. Ronald Gould, his uncle Willie Coney, Sr (Rose) and siblings, Charlie Coney, Jr. (Rose), Nathaniel Nelson (Selena), Catherine Rogers-Burrell, and Cheryl Harmon, step aunt F Patricia Gould and numerous nieces and nephews as well as his husband’s family. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Nathaniel Coney, Esther Coney, and Travis Coney.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 12:00 PM at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI. United States Army honors will be rendered in recognition of Isaac’s service to his country.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation has been respectfully omitted.
