“So the kids, they dance, they shake their bones.”
James J. O'Brien, 66, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Morton Hospital in Taunton, MA after a courageous fight with pulmonary fibrosis brought on by his lifelong battle with rheumatoid arthritis. Born on January 16, 1958, in the Bronx, New York, to Margaret (Stutzer) O'Brien and the late James J. O'Brien, Jim’s warmth and vivacity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Jim’s life was one of dedication and joy. A loving father, he is survived by his children, Meghan O'Brien of Sharon, MA, Caitlin O'Brien of Sharon, MA, Shannon O'Brien of East Providence, and James P. O'Brien of East Providence. He was a guiding light and inspiration to his grandchildren, Sophia Medeiros, John Medeiros, and Lucas Melter, who will carry his legacy forward. Jim also leaves behind his caring sisters, Elizabeth O'Brien Dodge of Oakland, CA, and Nancy O'Brien of East Taunton, MA, along with many adored nieces and nephews. Known by “Grip” or “Big Jimmy” to the family, he was quick to make a friendly joke at your expense, whip out a Monty Python or Seinfeld reference at any moment, and
Professionally, Jim was the respected Materials Manager for Alcoa Fastening Systems, where his intelligence and problem-solving abilities were greatly valued. Since 1995, he called Riverside his home, after moving from Foxboro, MA, and quickly became an integral part of the community. He was known by “Obie” to cherished colleagues and friends with whom he remained close with until the end.
Those who knew Jim will remember him as a spirited individual, always ready to share a friendly conversation or a hearty laugh. His intelligence was matched by his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, earning him the reputation as the "go-to guy" for just about everything. A sports enthusiast, Jim was a dedicated coach for the Riverside Little League and a fervent fan of the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and the Pawtucket Red Sox, rarely missing a chance to cheer on his favorite teams.
Music and sports were among Jim’s favorite pastimes, but nothing compared to the joy he felt while spending time with his family and grandchildren. His love for them was boundless, and every moment shared was cherished. Jim’s spirit was also embodied in his love for the open road, often seen driving around in his distinctive orange Jeep, with the tunes of the Grateful Dead playing in the background. A pint of Guinness in hand, he was always up for good company and good conversation.
Jim’s presence was a gift to those around him, his friendly nature, intelligence, and spirited personality making him a beloved figure in his community. He has left a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will continue to inspire and comfort his loved ones.
As we bid farewell to James J. O'Brien, we reflect on a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His stories, his laughter, and his wisdom will live on in the hearts of those he touched. Though we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he led and the countless ways in which he enriched our lives.
