John Terra (1938 – 2026)

John Terra, a man of steadfast work ethic and deep devotion to his family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 11, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on February 7, 1938, in the seaside town of Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores, John’s life was defined by his journey from the shores of Portugal to the heart of the Portuguese-American community in New England.       

A Life of Dedication

John’s professional journey began at the young age of 16 at Lajes Field Air Force Base, where he served faithfully until 1967. Seeking new opportunities, he emigrated to the United States that year, bringing with him a trademark reliability that would define his career. John spent over 30 years at Davol, Inc., where his leadership and experience led him to the role of foreman. He was widely respected by his colleagues as a mentor and a guide until his retirement.

Community & Passions

John remained deeply connected to his heritage as an active, longtime member of the Ateneu Luso Americano Club in Fall River, MA. An athlete in his youth, John was a lifelong, fierce supporter of the Benfica football club. When he wasn't cheering for his favorite soccer stars, he could be found rooting for the New England Patriots. Beyond sports, John had a great appreciation for his culture’s cuisine and was a familiar, friendly face at local Portuguese restaurants.

Family & Legacy

Above all else, John was a family man. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Maria de Deus, whose partnership was the cornerstone of his existence. While he held many titles, "Padrinho" was perhaps his favorite; he was a beloved figure to his many nieces and nephews, leaving them with cherished memories of fishing trips, soccer matches, and the steady, caring presence of a man who lived for his own.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 18,2026at 9:30am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME,901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence.

Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Wednesday MORNING from 9:30am -10:30am in the funeral home.
