East Providence - Jose Henrique Bernardo, 71, affectionately known as Jose, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Advent Health in Palm Coast, Florida. Born on June 26, 1954, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Jose was a man of faith, wisdom, and boundless love, whose life was a testament to the strong bonds of family and the joy of simple pleasures.
A devoted husband, Jose, was married to the love of his life, Maria Espirito Santo (Vieira) Bernardo, for over 48 years. Their enduring partnership was filled with mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support. The son of the late Jose Jacinto Bernardo and Irminia DaGloria (Rebelo) Bernardo, Jose carried the legacy of his parents with grace and dignity throughout his life.
Jose's role as a father was one he cherished deeply. His children, Donny Bernardo and his wife Kristen (Braga) of West Warwick, Michael Bernardo of Pawtucket, and Lindsay Vieira and her husband Eddy Vieira III, of East Providence, were the pride of his life. His guidance and wisdom left an indelible mark on their hearts and will continue to guide them.
His sister, Maria Narcismento-Gouveia and her late husband Antonio of Toronto, Canada, shared a special bond with Jose. His lifelong friendship with his best friend Manny Placido and his wife Teresa of East Providence, whom he considered "like a brother," was a source of great joy and companionship.
Jose's role as an uncle to Fatima and Nelson Gouveia and many more nieces and nephews was filled with moments of mentorship and fun, and as a grandfather, he was nothing short of extraordinary. Aaron, Christian, and Noah Bernardo, Darius, Aevyn, Vieira, Aliyha, Adriana, and Malania Bernardo were blessed with a grandfather who showered them with love, attention, and the kind of wisdom that only a man of his character could impart.
Professionally, Jose dedicated many years to the Maintenance Department for Balfour Properties before retiring. His strong work ethic and commitment to his job were evident to all who worked alongside him. Although he lived in East Providence for many years, he found great happiness in his move to Palm Coast, Florida, three years prior to his passing.
Jose was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Providence, where his faith was nurtured and flourished. His interests included traveling, especially to Portugal and Florida, where he enjoyed the beauty and culture of his heritage. A passionate fan of Sporting F.C. Soccer, Jose found excitement and camaraderie in the sport. Above all, Jose treasured the time spent with his family and grandchildren, recognizing those moments as the most precious of all.
Jose Henrique Bernardo will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. His faith-filled approach to life, his wise counsel, and his unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he loved.
