Joseph Dutra Obituary

Joseph J. Dutra,86, known affectionately to all as Joe, passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Coast, Florida, on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Born on January 17, 1940, in Bristol, Rhode Island, Joe's life was marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a love for life's simple pleasures.

Joe's journey began as the cherished son of the late John and Josephine (Cicero) Dutra. His early years in Bristol laid the foundation for a life filled with love, hard work, and commitment. Joe's heart found its match in Sandra (Joslin) Dutra, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey of over 63 years of marriage, filled with shared moments and enduring love.

A proud father, Joe's legacy continued through his children: Frank Dutra and his fiancée Amanda Deacon of Ormond Beach, Florida; Gina Roy and her husband Donald of Seekonk; Deborah Swider and her husband Mark of West Warwick; and Sheri Poirier and her husband Michael of Palm Coast, Florida. Joe's guiding hand and loving heart shaped their lives, and his influence will forever be felt.

Joe's family circle extended to his siblings, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. He is survived by his brother John Dutra of Fernandina Beach, Florida; sister Jo Ann Silingo of Woodridge, Illinois; and he was a caring uncle to many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his sister, the late Maryann Roldan.

The joys of grandfatherhood were bestowed upon Joe, and he embraced this role with enthusiasm. He delighted in the growth and achievements of his grandchildren: Ashley Bonville, Christopher Joseph Roy, Lindsey Swider, Amanda Swider, and Charlie Phillips. His great-grandchild, Grey Bonville, added another layer of joy to his life.

Joe dutifully served his country as a veteran of the US Army. His strong work ethic was evident throughout his career as a Union Laborer for Local 271 Construction, where he worked from 1965 until his retirement in 2002. Upon retiring, Joe and Sandra relocated to Florida in 2015 from East Providence, where they started a new chapter filled with sunshine and warmth.

A man of faith, Joe was a devoted parishioner of St. Martha Church, where he found solace and community. His interests were many and varied, including boating, bowling, travel, and fishing. Joe was also an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, taking pleasure in the camaraderie and excitement of the games.

People were naturally drawn to Joe because of his kind, friendly, and loving nature. His presence was a comfort, his laughter infectious, and his willingness to help others a hallmark of his character. Joe's life was a testament to the power of kindness and the importance of family and friends.

As we reflect on the life of Joseph J. Dutra, we celebrate the gift that he was to all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, a blueprint for a life well-lived, and memories that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
