Pawtucket - Joseph Raposa Santos, Sr., 89, a cherished family man, and respected community member, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2024, at the Eastgate Nursing Home in East Providence, RI. Born on November 9, 1934, in Providence, RI, Joseph's life was a testament to his loving, kind, and faith-filled nature.
Joseph, known affectionately to friends and family as Joe, was the beloved husband of Cermilda (Pacheco) Santos. He was the proud son of the late Carlos "Charles" Raposa Santos and Laura (Mello) Santos. His legacy continues through his children, Joseph R. Santos, Jr. of Pawtucket, and Veronica P. Santos of Pawtucket. He was a supportive brother to Marie Coelho of Schenectady, NY, and predeceased by his siblings, Carlos "Charlie" Santos, George Santos, and Gloria Selaimen. Joe's warm presence will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews, who found in him a generous uncle and a guiding light.
Joseph's work ethic was as strong as his spirit. For over three decades, he dedicated his skills as a steelworker to the former BIF Company. His intellectual curiosity led him to further his education, earning an Electronics degree from the New England Institute of Technology, specializing in office machinery. Joseph's commitment to his country was evident through his service as a US Army Specialist 4th class Radio Operator, where he served with honor before receiving an honorable discharge.
A Pawtucket resident for over 56 years, Joseph was an active member of his community. He was a former parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Providence and St. Mary's Church in Pawtucket. His involvement in these communities reflected his deep faith and his desire to serve others.
Joseph's passions were as diverse as his talents. An avid Ham Radio operator, he connected with people across the globe, sharing stories and forging friendships. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for fishing and hunting, activities that brought him peace and joy. Travel was another of Joseph's pleasures, and together with his wife, he explored the beauty of Europe and Australia, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Those who knew Joseph would describe him as a beacon of love and kindness. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life's challenges and triumphs. He approached every day with a sense of gratitude and lived his life in service to his family, his friends, and his faith.
Joseph Raposa Santos, Sr.'s journey on earth may have come to an end, but his spirit remains a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. His unwavering love, compassionate heart, and enduring faith leave a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
