Joseph Sousa, Jr.

EAST PROVIDENCE – Joseph Sousa, Jr., 85, of East Providence, formerly of Seekonk, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband of the late June M. (Cavanaugh) Sousa, who predeceased him on January 14, 2011.

Born in Providence, RI on October 18, 1939, Joe was a loving son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Ferreira) Sousa. He was employed for many years at Washburn Wire in Rumford, and later worked for Getty Petroleum and Mutual Oil.

Joe was a lifelong baseball enthusiast and a devoted Boston Red Sox fan. He enjoyed spending time at Twin River Casino, especially playing High-Low-Jack and Blackjack. A true lover of music, he favored oldies and country—and was an especially big fan of “The King,” Elvis Presley.

He is survived by his children: Joseph Sousa III and his companion Lorraine Sorel of East Providence; Richard Sousa and his companion Cheryl Cochrane of Seekonk; and Carol Harrington and her husband Neal of Hudson, NH. He also leaves five cherished grandchildren—Mandy, Keri, Mehgan, Renee, Paul and Victoria—and seven great-grandchildren.

Joe was the dear brother of William Sousa and his wife Kathy of Seekonk, and Betty Sousa of South Carolina; and sister-in-law Marie Sousa of West Warwick. He was predeceased by his sister Eleanor McAuliffe and brother Charles Sousa.

His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited, will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at 12:30 PM in the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside, where Joe will be laid to rest beside his beloved June.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
