Kenneth Averill, Jr Obituary

Kenneth Leigh Averill Jr.

March 7, 1952 – February 18, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kenneth Leigh Averill Jr., who passed away after a brave battle with Leukemia. Born on March 7, 1952, to Kenneth L. Averill Sr. and Catherine W. (Hutchinson) Averill. Ken grew up in East Providence, RI, later settling in Coventry, RI, to raise his family. In recent years, he made his home in Southington, CT.

Ken was a man of many passions, always eager to learn and explore new interests. From chess to beer making, remote control airplanes to HAM radio, bowling to candle making, genealogy to poker—his curiosity knew no bounds. He was an adventurer at heart, finding joy in traveling and discovering new experiences, he particularly had an affinity for the English canals. Yet, of all his pursuits, his greatest love was his family.

He built a successful career in the machine tool industry, beginning as a machinist at the age of 18 at Grinnell and culminating as a Project Engineer with companies including Guill Tool and Stanley Bostitch. His skill, dedication, and problem-solving abilities earned him the respect of colleagues throughout his career.

Ken was also a man of deep faith and was an active member of the extended Shaker community in Maine. He was a member of the Board of the United Society of Shakers and the Board of the Friends of the Shakers. His beliefs guided his life, shaping the kindness, generosity, and devotion he showed to those around him.

He shared over 51 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Marylou (Broderick) Averill, creating a lifetime of cherished memories. Ken is survived by his son, Kenneth L. Averill III, and his wife, Monika (Vosyliute), of Tewksbury, MA; his daughter, Rebecca Averill Vernick, and her fiancé, Domenic Campopiano; his beloved grandsons, Eli Vernick and Carson Vernick of Southington, CT; and his brother-in-law, James Racine of Riverside, RI.  He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine (Averill) Racine of Riverside, RI.

Ken will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his adventurous spirit, love of learning, many stories and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
