Leona Victoria (Austin) Dermody

Seekonk - Leona Victoria Dermody, affectionately known as Leona by her loved ones, passed away gracefully at the age of 94 on Saturday March 7, 2026,at her daughter’s home in Plainville, MA. Born on July 2, 1931, in Goodland, Kansas, to the late Otto A. and Myrtle (Hall) Austin, Leona's journey was one marked by devotion, compassion, and a zest for life that touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Leona was the beloved wife of the late Walter Francis Dermody, a cherished union that blessed them with loving children, Richard Dermody and his wife Carla of Granby, MA, and Kathleen Leahy and her husband Walter of Plainville, MA. She carried the memory of her late son, Walter F. Dermody, Jr., in her heart. The family circle included her late siblings Bud Austin, Issabelle Hellerud, and Nettie Gilbert. Leona's legacy continued through her adored grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelly, Alexa, Ryan, and Shaughn, and her great-grandchildren, Gordon, Michael, Hailey, Zachary, Brooklynn, and Logan, who will forever treasure their time with her.

Leona's commitment to education led her to obtain her Master's Degree in Psychology, a field where she would make a lasting impact. Her career as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor spanned many years, during which she offered hope and guidance to countless individuals on their path to recovery. With an unwavering dedication to her community, she later established private practice, where she continued to serve with distinction for over a decade.

Since relocating to Seekonk in 1975 from Holyoke, MA, Leona became a steadfast parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life; she found solace and strength in attending Adoration four times a week at the church. Leona's devout spirituality was evident in her everyday actions and the love she spread throughout her community.

Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Leona had a passion for life's simple pleasures. She was an avid gardener whose blooms brought beauty to the world. Her love of travel took her on many adventures, while her love for reading allowed her to explore worlds beyond her own. An ardent animal lover, she gave her heart to every creature she met, nurturing them with the same kindness she showed to people.

Friends and family will remember Leona for her loving nature and her kind soul. She was a beacon of faith, whose light shone brightly in the lives of those she touched. Her warmth, generosity, and unwavering support were the hallmarks of a life well-lived.

Leona's presence will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be cherished by her numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, who found in her a source of endless love and wisdom.

As we bid farewell to Leona Victoria Dermody, we celebrate a life that exemplifies love, kindness, and faith. Her journey on earth may have ended, but her influence will persist, as enduring as the cherished memories she leaves behind.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 10:00am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church,984 Taunton Avenue, Seekonk, MA. 

Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA. at a later date.
