Manuel Dos Santos Obituary

Manuel Roque dos Santos, beloved father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on August 18th, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Carreiros, Portugal, to the late Idalina Pessoa Roque and José Gomes da Costa Santos. He is survived by his three children, Claudio Manuel Andrade Santos, Vania Maria Andrade Santos, Janice Maria Santos, his sister Dulcinia Pessoa Santos, his 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His siblings José Pessoa Santos and Maria Pessoa Santos preceded him in death.

Manuel lived a full life rich with adventure, creativity, and deep connection to both people and nature, a passion that guided him through extraordinary journeys across the high seas. At just 20 years old, he began what would become a two-decade-long career as a commercial fisherman, traveling to South Africa and beyond. He chose this life not only for the adventure but also to avoid being drafted into the Portuguese Colonial Wars, demonstrating his commitment to peace and autonomy.

Though often far from home, Manuel remained close to those he loved. He found thoughtful ways to connect with his then-wife, Maria Odete de Andrade Cecilio. He would often write heartfelt letters to her and family while at sea. After spending time at sea, he immigrated to the United States in 1988, determined to build a better life for his growing family.

Manuel also had a passion for music. He was a talented, self-taught saxophone, accordion, and harmonica player. He brought joy to many people around him, including those of the Portuguese Rancho Folclórico de Pawtucket, of which he was an instructor in its initial years. His two sports of choice were fishing and hunting. He was also a skilled cook who delighted in preparing meals for family and friends, especially when the main dish was his catch or hunt of the day. Having a meal with his loved ones would always be accompanied by smiles, riddles, jokes and lots of love.

He was a man of respect, warmth, deep faith and authenticity. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him. He was a true patriot of his country, and based on his wish, he will be laid to rest in his hometown in Portugal. A local celebration of life will be scheduled in the near future.
