Iowa City, Iowa - Maria A. Duarte, PhD, known to many simply as Maria, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at home ,in Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of 77.

Born on January 10, 1949, in Faial, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria A. (Furtado) Duarte. Maria carried the heritage of her birthplace with her throughout her life, and she remained deeply connected to the values of family, education, and perseverance that shaped her from an early age. She later made her home in the United States, where she built a life marked by dedication, warmth, and quiet strength.

Maria lived in Iowa City since 1982, and the community became the setting for many of the most meaningful chapters of her life. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School, and her commitment to learning continued throughout her years. Her professional life was distinguished by her long career as a Professor at the University of Iowa, where she served for many years. Through her work, she touched the lives of students and colleagues alike, offering not only knowledge and guidance, but also encouragement, patience, and a genuine respect for others.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend, her graveside service on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00am in the Mt. St. Mary’s Cemetery, 661 Prospect Street, Pawtucket .
