Maria Laura (DaRocha) Cortez

Maria Laura (DaRocha) Cortez,91, formerly of Providence, known affectionately as Laura by her friends and family, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Riverview Health Center in Coventry. Born on the first day of 1933 in Sao Miguel, Azores, Laura was a beacon of love and faith throughout her 91 years of life.

Laura was the beloved wife of the late Manuel D. Cortez, Jr., and the cherished daughter of the late Manuel and Georgina (Furtado) DaRocha. Her legacy continues through her devoted son, Manuel Cortez of Cumberland, her loving son, Matthew Cortez of Pawleys Island, SC, and her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will miss her deeply. Laura was predeceased by her son, the late Michael Cortez, who no doubt welcomed her with open arms.

For over 40 years, Laura served her community with dedication and care as a Teacher's Aide for HeadStart. Her unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds left an indelible mark on countless lives. Her passion for education and her ability to connect with children were among the many gifts she shared generously.

Laura's faith was the cornerstone of her life. A former parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church and a regular attendee at St. Francis Xavier Church, her faith-filled presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to many. Laura's kindness and loving nature were evident to all who knew her, and her spirit was a reflection of the teachings she held so dear.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing Laura would describe her as the epitome of love and kindness. Her gentle demeanor, coupled with her strong faith, made her a guiding light in her community. Laura's ability to love unconditionally and her readiness to lend a helping hand were qualities that endeared her to many.

Laura's interests extended beyond her church activities and her professional life. She took great joy in the simple pleasures of life and found happiness in the laughter of her grandchildren. The memories created during family gatherings, her wisdom imparted during long conversations, and the warmth of her smile will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to experience them.

As we bid farewell to Maria Laura Cortez, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, service, and faith. Her influence will continue to be felt by those who were touched by her kind spirit. Laura's journey on earth may have come to a close, but her legacy of love and compassion will resonate for generations to come.

Laura's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Riverview Health Center for their compassionate care during her final days. Their kindness and support provided comfort to Laura and her loved ones during this difficult time.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Laura will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Manuel, in a private ceremony. As we honor her memory, let us hold close the lessons of love and faith that she embodied. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visiting hours on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 4:00pm- 7:00pm in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 9:00am from the Rebello Funeral Home, with a brief prayer service at 10:00am in the chapel of Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.  www. Rebellofuneralhome.com.
