East Providence - Mary Elizabeth Moreira, known affectionately as Betty to her family and friends, passed away peacefully at Evergreen Nursing Home in East Providence on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on June 27, 1943, in Providence, Rhode Island, she was the cherished daughter of the late John and Mary (Vieira) DaTerra, and the devoted wife of the late Manuel P. Moreira, Jr.
Mary's life was a testament to her loving and faith-filled nature. She dedicated over a decade of her career to caring for the sick as an LPN nurse at the former St. Joseph Hospital, and as a phlebotomist after leaving the hospital, where her kindness and care left a lasting impression on both colleagues and patients. Her commitment to her work was paralleled only by her devotion to her family and her faith.
As a lifelong resident of East Providence, Mary was a dedicated parishioner of Sacred Heart Church. Her religious conviction was a cornerstone of her existence, and she found great joy in traveling to Rome to witness the Pope, an experience that deeply enriched her faith and life.
Mary's legacy is carried on by her loving children, Joseph Rainville III and his wife Natalie of Bristol, RI, Monica Rainville-Baton and her husband Raymond Baton of Richmond, RI, Peter Rainville and his wife Aida of East providence, RI, Russell Rainville of Warren, RI, and Kenneth Rainville and his wife, Melissa of Chicopee, Mass. She also cherished her role as an aunt to 1 niece, and 4 nephews. Mary was predeceased by her brother, John DaTerra Jr., and sister Madeline Frausto, but she will be fondly remembered as the adoring grandmother of 7 and great-grandmother of 9, who brought an abundance of joy and laughter into her life. Her warmth and love extended to the many lives she touched and would always put the needs of others first over her own.
Those who knew Mary (Betty) will recall a woman who embodied love and kindness. Her heart was an open door, always welcoming and filled with compassion for others. Her presence was a comfort, and her guidance was sought by many within her close-knit community. Mary's faith was the guiding light of her existence, illuminating the path for those around her through her example of grace and devotion.
As we bid farewell to Mary Elizabeth Moreira, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Mary's spirit, characterized by her loving nature and unwavering faith, will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. Though she may have departed from this earthly realm, the essence of who she was – a loving, kind, and faith-filled soul – remains eternal.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday January 8, 2026, at 9:30am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Church, 118 Taunton Avenue, East Providence.
