Mary O'Connell Obituary

Mary Alice O'Connell,84, of East Providence, affectionately known to all as Mary, was a beacon of love and warmth to everyone who knew her. Born on December 1, 1939, in Providence, Rhode Island, to the late Manuel and Florence E. (Cunha) Junior, Mary's journey through life was marked by kindness, creativity, and a loving spirit. On Saturday, June 8, 2024, Mary passed away peacefully at Evergreen House in East Providence, RI, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Mary spent her formative years in New Bedford, MA., cultivating a life rich with family and community ties. She later moved to East Providence, where she would eventually settle down and become a well-known and respected member of the local area. Mary's working life was spent engaging with her community as a retail clerk and as counter help in several doughnut shops, where her warm smile and kind words became a comforting presence to many.

A devoted mother, Mary's legacy is carried on by her loving children: William F. O'Connell Jr. of Wisconsin, Renee Silva and her husband Edwin Silva of Pawtucket, Cynthia "Cyndi" Oliver and her husband Rick of Riverside, and Wendy Morrow of East Providence. She was a nurturing sister to Angela "Angie" Pontes of Warwick and is predeceased by her brothers, Philip Junior and Lawrence Junior. Mary's joy was multiplied by her many nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will all remember her for her unconditional love and support.

Mary's faith was an integral part of her life, and she was a dedicated parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. Her spiritual devotion was a testament to her kind and loving nature, and it provided her with strength and solace throughout her life's journey.

Her creative soul found expression in the intricate patterns of the knitting and crocheting she so enjoyed. Mary was also an avid reader, often found with a book in hand, lost in stories that spanned every genre. Her love for old movies was well-known; she could often be found recounting the tales of classic cinema with a fondness that was infectious.

One of Mary's most cherished pastimes was looking at lighthouses. Their steadfast presence and guiding light were reflections of her own life—a symbol of hope, guidance, and unwavering love that she provided to all who knew her.

Mary will be remembered as a loving, kind, and creative soul, whose impact on the world was as gentle as it was profound. Her ability to touch the lives of others with her compassion and warmth will be deeply missed, but the memories she created will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of her family and friends.

As we say farewell to Mary Alice O'Connell, we celebrate a life lived with an abundance of love and a commitment to the simple joys that make life so precious. Her spirit will forever be a guiding light to those she leaves behind, as enduring and constant as the lighthouses she so admired.

Mary's life story is not one of an ending, but a beautiful reminder that love endures and the legacy of a life well-lived is the cherished memories and lasting bonds we hold dear. Her family takes comfort in knowing that Mary's kind and creative spirit will continue to inspire them in all their days to come.
