It is with deep sadness and devastation that we announce the passing of Matthew Berkovitz, age 36, who tragically lost his life alongside his father, Paul Berkovitz, in an airplane crash on May 3rd, 2025. Matthew was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, whose warmth, laughter, and infectious spirit brightened the lives of all who knew him.
Matthew was the cherished son of Paul Berkovitz and Cheryl Ferreira and stepson of Michael Devane, and Veronica Evans his stepmother. He shared an incredible bond with his mother, Cheryl, and stepfather Michael and their relationship was built on unconditional love, compassion and understanding. Matthew looked to Cheryl and Michael for guidance, and they were always his rock. Their deep connection was central to his life, and his loss leaves an unfillable void in her heart.
Matthew was also a loving brother to Lauren and brother-in-law Andrew Wells, with whom he became especially close later in life. Over the years, their bond grew stronger, and Lauren became one of his closest friends, a relationship that brought Matthew much joy and comfort. As an “fun-uncle” to Grayson and Bryn Wells, Matthew was so devoted and deeply loved his niece and nephew and showered them with love and laughter. He cherished every moment spent with them, creating lasting memories.
Matthew was a proud graduate of St. Andrew's High School in Barrington, Rhode Island, and he furthered his education at the University of Rhode Island (URI). During his early years, he spent time pursuing Acting in Hollywood. Later in life he found his professional calling in the construction industry, where he worked with passion and dedication. Over the years, Matthew built strong relationships with clients who eventually became lifelong friends. His work ethic, coupled with his genuine care for others, allowed him to make lasting connections that went beyond the job site.
An adventurer at heart, Matthew loved water—he had been swimming since childhood—and was passionate about aviation, skiing, hiking, travel, and immersing himself in nature. Whether it was a hike, flying somewhere new, or simply relaxing by the water, Matthew embraced every new experience with open arms. He had a deep appreciation for all things Boston sports especially his deep love for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins.
Matthew also had an amazing sense of humor and wit, a true love for great food and coffee, often savoring a well-brewed cup of coffee and enjoying a great meal. These simple pleasures were a big part of who he was and how he experienced the world.
Matthew moved back to California just one month before his untimely passing, embarking on a new business venture. He was excited about this fresh chapter in his life, and those close to him knew that he was ready to take on the world with his usual enthusiasm. Tragically, the plane crash cut his journey short, but Matthew’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Matthew’s bond with his father, Paul, was one of deep love and respect. They shared countless moments together, including their love for flying. The tragic loss of both father and son has been a devastating blow to the family, but they find comfort in knowing the strength of their relationship and the many memories they created together.
Matthew was known for his kindness, generosity, and the way he made everyone feel valued. His laughter was contagious, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. He had a unique ability to bring people together, making them feel welcome and cared for. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched, including his family, friends, and clients turned friends.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Cheryl Ferreira (Michael Devane), his sister Lauren Berkovitz Wells (Andrew Wells), his nieces Grayson and Bryn Wells, step siblings William Devane, Austin and Alexandria Evans, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in his death by Robert Ferreira, Barbara Ferreira, Eleanore Berkovitz, and Archie Berkovitz.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 9:00am-12:00pm in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a prayer service at 11:30am. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.
