Johnston - With a heart full of love and a spirit devoted to her faith and family, Neli M. (Barbosa) Cordeiro, passed away surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Johnston, Rhode Island on Monday, January 5, 2026. Born on October 11, 1959, in the picturesque village of Feteiras Do Sul, São Miguel Açores.
Neli was the cherished wife of Jose M. Cordeiro, her partner of over 47 years, sharing a lifetime built on love, commitment, and family. She was the beloved daughter of the late Manuel R. and Ilda (Pereira) Barbosa, a lineage that instilled in her the values of family and faith which she carried throughout her life.
A dedicated mother, Neli took immense pride in raising her son, Kyle M. Cordeiro of Johnston. She was also the mother of the late Phillip S. Cordeiro. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, particularly in caring for her special needs son, which showcased the immense depth of her love and strength. Her affectionate nature extended to her siblings, George P. Barbosa and his wife Margaret of Rehoboth, MA, Grace Ferreira and her husband Alberto of East Providence. She was the loving sister of her late brother Carlos Manuel Barbosa and was cherished by her late brother-in-law Mario Ferreira. Her warmth and generosity reached far, touching the lives of the many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews & many godchildren across different countries (some of whom lovingly “fought” for the title of “her favorite goddaughter”).
Professionally, Neli made her mark in the Radiology Department at the Miriam Hospital, where her work ethic and compassion were evident to all who worked alongside her. Her move to Johnston over 20 years ago, after living in Providence and East Providence, marked a new chapter where she continued to make a positive impact on her community.
Neli was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church, and her faith was a cornerstone of her existence. Her religious devotion was clear as she actively participated in the Holy Ghost and Espirito Santo feasts, celebrating her heritage and beliefs with joy and reverence. Her volunteer work at Meeting Street School and Sacred Heart School reflected her deep belief in giving back and supporting the most vulnerable in society.
Beyond her professional and religious commitments, Neli was a true caregiver at heart, known for her selfless nature, generously giving her time assisting others with paperwork, and navigating life’s complexities, never expecting anything in return. Known for her joyful spirit, Neli loved to have a great time and was always willing to help with gatherings—whether decorating, setting up, or simply being there to support family and friends. Her presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of togetherness wherever she went.
Neli will be remembered for her genuine kindness, her generous heart, and her unwavering love for her family. A breast cancer survivor, she faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength, courage, and grace. Her resilience was an inspiration to those who knew her, and she carried her journey with humility and quiet determination.
Above all else, Neli was a devoted mother to her son, who was the center of her world. Her love and patience defined her life and guided everything she did. As we remember Neli, we celebrate the light she brought into the world—a light that will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday January 10,2026 at 11:30am in St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
