Olimpio Medeiros Obituary

RIVERSIDE – Olimpio M. Medeiros, 83, a resident of Riverside for the past 58 years, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria Conceicao (Ventura) Medeiros, who passed away on March 30, 2025.

Born in Ribeiro Grande, São Miguel, Azores on September 11, 1942, he was the loving son of the late Manuel F. Medeiros and Alice (Correia) Medeiros. Olimpio emigrated to the United States from Portugal in 1956 at the age of 14 with his family, settling in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence. Several years after marrying and starting his own family, he made Riverside his home.

Olimpio was a longtime employee of Tower Iron Works in Seekonk, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. A man of deep Catholic faith, he was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Fox Point and later of Saint Brendan Parish in Riverside.

He was a devoted and influential member of the Teófilo Braga Club in East Providence, serving as both a longtime member since 1963 and president from 1989 to 2008. Olimpio was a founding father of the club’s annual Feast of the Holy Ghost, which began in 1987. Deeply proud of his Portuguese heritage, he was an active leader within the local Portuguese-American community. Through the club, he selflessly helped countless individuals—fixing problems, mentoring others, teaching English, and assisting many in establishing new lives in this country.

Olimpio was also a longtime member of the Portuguese Sporting Club in Providence and an avid soccer fan. A devoted Boston Red Sox “suffering fan,” he proudly counted himself among the “Fenway Faithful,” remaining loyal through the lean years and cheering passionately when championships finally came.

He loved his home and especially treasured time spent beneath the grapevine in his backyard. A family man through and through, Olimpio worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved, and his happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his devoted children: Armando Medeiros of East Providence; C. Kim Atherton and her husband Robert of Riverside; and Laurie Sparks and her husband Michael of Rehoboth. He leaves his cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, James, Brennan, and Sean, as well as five great-grandchildren. He was the dear brother of Conceicao Lemos, Fernando Medeiros, Phyllis Jorge, and Rosemary Garcia, all of East Providence. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws to mourn his passing.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Medeiros, and his daughter-in-law, the late Oriana Medeiros.

His funeral, to which relatives and friends are most kindly invited, will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 9:00 AM from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Reverend Joseph Escobar at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside, where Olimpio will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, Maria.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Olimpio’s memory to the Teófilo Braga Club Scholarship Fund, 26 Teófilo Braga Way, East Providence, RI 02914.
