Phyllis Mae Maddox, 80, a beacon of love and joy, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Hope Hospice in Providence, RI, the same city where she was born on August 1, 1943. Her life was a testament to the power of living authentically, touching the hearts of those around her with her loving, intelligent, and thoughtful nature.
The daughter of the late John and Grace (Valentine) Maddox, Phyllis was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Lisa Maddox of Providence, and was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Tracy Ann Maddox - Brown. Phyllis's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Danielle, Erica, Jordan and Genesis Maddox; Parrys Delacruz (Jose). She was also the proud great-grandmother of Synai, A’lijah Aadyn, Khari, and Navy Maddox, Savara and Sarae Speaks, Noelle and Sydney Delacruz.
Her role as a matriarch was further extended to her Godchild, Michelle Gray.
Phyllis's siblings held a special place in her life. She is survived by her brother John Maddox of Maryland and was predeceased by her siblings Marilyn Shogrin, Emily Greene, Bruce Maddox, and Allen Maddox. Her extended family of nieces and nephews will remember her for her unwavering support and the joy she brought to family gatherings.
A valued member of her community, Phyllis dedicated over five years of service as a staff assistant at a local group home before her retirement. Her caring nature and ability to connect with others made a lasting impact on the lives of many.
Her best friend, Joan Walker, stood by her side through many of life's chapters. Together, they shared countless memories filled with music, laughter, and dance. Phyllis's love for music and dancing was infectious, and her passion for plants reflected her nurturing spirit. She cultivated beauty not only in her garden but in the relationships, she so tenderly cared for.
Phyllis lived life unapologetically on her terms. She inspired those around her to embrace life with zest and to find joy in the everyday. Her intelligence shone through in her thoughtful conversations and her ability to solve problems with grace.
As we say goodbye to Phyllis Mae Maddox, we celebrate the extraordinary life she led and the immeasurable warmth she left in our hearts. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and her memory will be cherished forever. Phyllis's life was a beautiful melody that resonated with kindness, and her dance will continue in the hearts of those who loved her.
