Robert Moniz Obituary

Exeter - Robert J. Moniz, affectionately known as Bob or the Portuguese Prince to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at RI Hospital Providence, RI.

Born on October 14, 1951, in East Providence, RI, to the late Joseph and Mary Theresa (Taveira) Moniz, Bob's life was one of dedication, service, and joyous musicality. Bob's love story is one for the ages, as he was the devoted husband of Suzanne J. (Cote) Moniz. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Bob was a proud father to Stephanie Allen and her husband Ryan of Lee, N.H., and Katie Moniz and her fiancé Kyle Gorham of Middleboro, MA.

His role as a brother was fulfilled with warmth and camaraderie to Joseph Moniz and Mary Porto, both of East Providence. Bob's joy multiplied as he became the cherished grandfather of Caroline and Nathan Allen. His caring nature extended to his role as an uncle to Terri Smith and Sebastian Porto. His family circle was completed by his beloved dog, Sherlock, who was a constant companion in his life.

For over 35 years, Bob served the State of RI with distinction achieving the position of Chief Electrical Inspector for the Department of Transportation. His commitment to his community continued as he assumed the role of Manager at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Wakefield. Bob was a longtime resident of Exeter, having moved there over 26 years ago from North Kingstown. He was a dedicated parishioner of St. Francis De Sales Church in North Kingstown, where his faith shone brightly through his service and involvement. Bob's faith was the cornerstone of his life.

For 47 years he was a respected member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Francis Council #2011 , he served as a Grand Knight there for 3 years. He was also a 4th degree Sir Knight of the Father Wallace Assembly #1066 in West Warwick. At the state level he was District Deputy for 6 years and was the long standing chairman of the Keep the Heat on Campaign for the Knights and he started the Teens are Dynamite initiative to support the area youth ministries. Bob was chosen Knight of the Year in 2020. His commitment to his faith was further exemplified as a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Northeastern Lieutenancy where he achieved the rank of Knight Commander.

For over four decades, Bob's melodic voice graced the Gregorian Choir at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Bob's interests and hobbies were as eclectic as they were passionate. He was a longtime board member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and found pleasure in the simple joys of working in his yard and collecting trains. As a member of the Amherst Train Society, he shared his love for the rails with fellow enthusiasts. Bob's love for music was a defining trait; he played the clarinet in the Holy Rosary Band, sang with the URI Chorus, and even composed his own songs.

His talent was notably showcased when he sang Elvis’s songs, captivating many with his skillful renditions. Bob's love for travel led him to many beautiful places, though he held a special fondness for vacationing in Maine. An avid fisherman, he found solace in the tranquility of the waters, and his guitar playing often provided a soundtrack for those serene moments. His love for music was a gift he shared freely, enriching the lives of all who had the pleasure of listening.

Described by those who knew him as loving, faith-filled, and passionate, Bob's legacy is one of unwavering love, enduring faith, and a zest for life that inspired everyone around him.
