Robert S. Soderlund, a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at Hope Hospice in Providence, RI, on Saturday May 25, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on May 21, 1939, in Pawtucket, RI, to the late John C. and Dorothy L. (Swanson) Soderlund, Robert's life was a testament to his loving, kind, and gentle nature.
A devoted family man, Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Calise) Soderlund. He was a proud father to Robert S. Soderlund, Jr. and his wife Stacy of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Lisa Marie Soderlund and her partner Jane of Bristol, RI. His legacy continues through his loving grandchild, Megan Elizabeth Pampu of Indianapolis . Robert also leaves behind his brothers, Stephen Charles Soderlund of Swansea, Massachusetts and Michael Norman Soderlund of Ct. He was predeceased by his brothers John Henry Soderlund and Clifford Joseph Soderlund. His life was further enriched by the joy of many nieces and nephews.
Robert's journey of education and service began with his graduation from East Providence High School in 1957. He went on to bravely serve his country in the United States Air Force as an Airman Second Class, specializing as a jet engine technician. After being honorably discharged, he continued his commitment to public service by joining the East Providence Fire Department. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Fire Science from Providence College while on the job. His dedication to helping others and his exceptional leadership skills led to his retirement as the revered Assistant Fire Chief after more than 34 years of service.
Beyond his professional life, Robert was a man of many interests. He was a former member of the Segregansett Country Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of the game. His passion for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants. Robert also found great pleasure in the simple joys of life, such as immersing himself in a good book and watching old western movies, which brought him much relaxation and happiness.
Robert's impact on the world was not limited to his professional achievements and hobbies. His gentle demeanor and loving nature were felt by all who knew him. He was the kind of person who would offer a helping hand without a second thought and who brought warmth and kindness to every interaction. His presence in the lives of his family and friends was a source of comfort and joy.
As we bid farewell to Robert S. Soderlund, we reflect on a life well-lived—a life filled with love, service, and the quiet strength that defined him. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will be cherished forever.
