Robert Turner Obituary

Rumford - Robert Eugene Turner, a beacon of love and guidance, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated servant to his community passed away of natural causes, in the company of his family peacefully at his home in Rumford, RI, on December 15, 2023, at the age of 86. Born on September 6, 1937, in Washington, D.C., he was the cherished son of the late William H. and Ruth A. (Mason) Turner. Robert, to his friends and family, led a life marked by devotion, service, and an unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of those around him.

A devoted husband of almost 40 years, Robert is survived by his loving wife Leigh (Fetterman) Turner. His legacy of love continues through his children, Geoff Turner and his wife Laura of Barrington, and Seth Turner and his wife Kellie of Newark, DE. Robert's joy was multiplied as a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Kate, Sam, Harry, Abby, and Madison. He is also remembered by his sister, Marty Nase of New Oxford, PA.

Robert's pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Carson-Newman College in Knoxville, Tennessee, and a Master of Divinity from Andover-Newton Theological Seminary in Newton, MA. His passion for community engagement propelled him to earn a master’s degree in Community Education as a Mott Scholar from Central Michigan University.

With a heart for service, Robert began his career as a Chaplain in the United States Navy Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. His journey of impact continued when he joined the YMCA as a youth activities leader. There, Robert discovered his true calling—guiding and nurturing nonprofits. His exceptional leadership and dedication were quickly recognized, and he rose through the ranks, leaving a lasting imprint as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of several YMCA branches in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Robert's innovative programs and steadfast commitment to community made a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Robert was an active member of the Woodworkers Guild of Rhode Island, where he channeled his creativity and skill. He found solace in woodworking, taking pride in crafting pieces that were as functional as they were beautiful. His love for classical music filled his workshop and home with an aura of tranquility, while his passion for reading allowed him to travel the world through the pages of books.

Above all, Robert's greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren. His love was the cornerstone of many cherished memories and traditions. Those who knew Robert would describe him as loving, kind, and handy—a man whose hands not only shaped wood but also the hearts and futures of his loved ones and community.

Robert's impact on the world is immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, the importance of community, and the enduring strength of family. As we bid farewell to Robert Eugene Turner, we do so with gratitude for his remarkable life and the countless ways he enriched ours. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, just as the stars continue to shine even after they have faded from view.
